Foundational Issues of Life Classes

To both my Paducah & Hopkinsville college courses…

So what foundational issues of life were covered in the movie Shadowlands that we watches together this week? What were your thoughts?

How were you moved or stirred to think about life, love, suffering and struggle?

I really enjoyed the movie. It really makes you think. You should live every moment to the fullest you never know when it will be taken away from you or someone you love can be taken away. I have to agree with Dr.B my favorite part was when he said I always I’m filled with the need to pray.

I was moved beyond control. I had great empathy for the mother and son relationship. Although, the love story between Jack and Joy was a wonderful. I remember Jack saying, “Perfect love is unattainable”. I was glad they found love even through the struggles they faced. I believe God guided them to each. The gift in the end was that Jack could be a good person to raise and protect the son. <3
And sorry Dr. Brad and classmates for crying during the whole movie.

I really enjoyed the movie. I especially like what was said about prayer and struggling. Even thought I already knew it, I loved what he said about prayer changing us not God. I also like the reference that pain was God’s megaphone, even though it was repeated several times it is still a good point. God definitely uses pain and suffering to teach us lessons.
On a side note, I would like to let the hopkinsville class know I have set up a google group. It’s private so I will need email addresses to add everyone, My email is harrismarci@hotmail.com, just shoot me an email and I will get you added.

The movie was great,It touched on almost every chapter in the blue book! It reminded me alot of the past Josh and I have been through thus far. God has truely blessed both of us in our journey. This movie remindes me that not everyone gets the second chance at life and love that we have since his transplant! I can honestly say it made me take a step back and realize everyday is a blessing to share with those we love.Jack and Joy werent always perfect for each other but found true love through the trials God set in front of them. Amazing if you ask me!!!! Was it just me or when Jack went to Joys apartment…. Did Joy put Douglas to bed before supper with the sun still out? Lol just threw me off a little!!!

I found that the movie hit on almost every chapter from the “Blue Book”. It made me step back and put my own life and relationship into perspective. I thought I had found my solitude while sitting in the dialysis chair 3 days a week for 4 hours. I have found my solitude sitting at at home with the t.v turned off reading the brown book with Angel. I also thought the movie was very touching in a lot of different ways. Mainly the fact that you can have everything one minute, and the next you can have nothing. I honestly can say. when it comes to struggle and suffering, I struggled through dialysis and an addiction for almost 4 years. On the suffering side of things, my family and loved ones suffered from my addiction as much or more than I did. I’ve done some pretty bad things over the last few years but the movie showed me that when people love you that much, they will stick by you through thick and thin, high and low. I am very blessed to have Angel in my life, she has stuck by me through so much and we are still together today. She is my best friend and I feel that God has brought us together and has plans for us, I just can’t wait to see what they are. I’m really enjoying the class so far, It’s a big difference from the worship and fellowship I am used to at my church. Thanks Dr. B for showing me that there is more to fellowship than just showing up at church on wednesday night and sunday.

I think the movie pretty much covered everything, Life, love, joy, suffering, pain, blessing, mercy, death. I loved so much of what Jack said. This movie was filled with so many truths, so many parts of life that people don’t usually see or view as being apart of God working in their lives for the good, to bring us closer to God & to where we need to be in Him.Pain & suffering is a very big part of what brings us closer to God, that is not the only thing but, a big part of it. I would never want to go back through the pain and sufferings I have been through but, I did a lot of my growing & coming closer to God during those times. I didn’t like the pain, however, I do like the results the pain brought to my Christian life and walk with God. This was an awesome movie! And Angel, I think she put him to bed in the afternoon, they sure did believe in putting their kids to bed early back then, LOL!

At first i was not understanding the movie. The longer i watched the more i came to understand…..To me she was brought into Jacks life in order for him to change some of his waya….i believe that in everyday life that people are brought into your life for a reason and sometimes for a season….my favorite quote was…experience is a brutal teacher but u learn…

I think God put Joy into Jack’s life to help him see the man he really was deep down. I think she knew before he did actually.God puts people in your life for a reason. I know he has for me. I loved the movie and almost have my husband talked into watching it! I learned not to take things for granted. And like Josh said, we can have everything one minute and the next it can all be taken away. The movie tought me about love, life, joy and forgiveness. I will definitely watch it again.

I too really enjoyed the movie. It was such a beautiful story. The quote by C.S. Lewis “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God, it changes me” truly spoke to me. Wow, what a powerful statement. I see, I don’t pray to change God’s mind, I pray to change myself. Foundational Issues of Life in this movie included, love, pray and friendship amoung others. It showed how to love and the power of prayer.
