I’m proud to work with denominations…

As many of you know, I was raised in a very solid Southern Baptist Church in Paducah, Kentucky. My heritage has been so helpful in developing solid theology, love for people and great leadership practices in me. I have been so blessed to serve with the SBC over the years.

A few years ago, our church started teaming up with both the KBC (Kentucky Baptist Convention) and the Evangelical Covenant Church, a denomination out of Chicago, IL who have done some amazing things with church planting in the past 15 years.

The ECC is small but potent. Theologically evangelical, missionaly aggressive, and ethnically diverse… the ECC has been a wonderful addition to 4 Rivers Church.

But more importantly, it has been a wonderful addition to my life. The times I have spent at events like the Church Planter Training Event in Boston this week have been truly formative for me. I have been overwhelmed with joy and reinergized with vigor for Christ’s calling in my life.

Thank you ECC for being used by Jesus to build spiritual vitality and missional passion in me. Thank you KBC for raising me, teaching me, discipling me and focusing me.

I am proud to work with denominations.

By Design Creatures of Faith

So I’m sitting here running slide shows for the Church Planter Training Center in Boston. And the speaker, a great Korean American dude who serves as the Director of Church Planting for the ECC named Peter Hong, just said that all people are “creatures of faith by design.”

What a great quote.

The question is not whether or not you will have faith. Its about whether or not you will have faith in the right things.

Peter, who is training for the Boston marathon, says laziness is a product of fear and energy/activity is a product of faith.

Is your lifestyle one driven by faith? Is your activity pushed by faith?

How does faith drive you?

As Peter closes, he says, ‘please believe in me and I will live for you.”

Do you believe in people? Does your relationship with them drive them toward faith based activity and driven spirit?

Gathered AND Scattered… some week for me…

I’m a church planter. I guess, considering that it has been 10 years, I have to admit that now, I’m a pastor more so than a church planter.

Planting, pastoring & even merging a church has been the most troubling, humbling, painful, discouraging and challenging thing of which I’ve ever been a part. I can’t really imagine ever being able to muster up the strength/guts to do it again.

It’s also, however, been the most rewarding, valuable and spiritually uplifting experience of my life… bar none…

Rarely do I ever feel as close to God as I did during the first year of planting 4RC. It was awesome… like we were living in the New Testament.

We saw conversion, battled demons, raised up leaders, and literally could see, feel, sense and know that we were walking with the Spirit of God in a way that few had been able to walk.

There have been a few watershed moments for me as a pastor/planter.

They are painful but life altering and usually add greatly to the story of God’s work in me.

This week, and the few years leading up to this week, have been used by God as one of those watershed moments.

Everything changes for me and probably anyone very close to me from this point on.

I’m headed back to town with more clarity than I’ve had in years. Seriously… years.

Over the past few years I have strived for clarity. But by and large I’ve been confused by most of the things I’ve encountered. I’ve struggled to hold together what we had given so much time to plant.

I’ve seen people come and go, lost very valuable relationships, been misunderstood and judged, and ultimately felt very weak as a leader.

And in the process I have missed the communion with God and the Saints that I had grown accustomed to. I’m ready to get that back.

I don’t care what the cost.

As our church has grown, my role has shifted many times. I’ve been what I thought I needed to be… not always what I was called to be…

I’m sure that has been a big part of the problem.

At this point I don’t know where to lay the blame. I’m sure I’m responsible for a big part of it.

And correctly laying blame isn’t worth the movement of God it may prevent anyway. So, that’s enough about whose at fault.

I’ve written all of this to end up at this point…

The local church in America is under attack. Sometimes those attacks come from inside. Sometimes from outside.

And sometimes, we actually battle ourselves. (Kind of makes sense, considering that Jesus’ long prayer in the gospels was that his followers would be united.) Its like He knew that we could move toward self destruction… if left unguided by His Spirit.

One major inner battle that our church and… based on what I saw at Exponential this weekend… many churches are facing is the struggle of Gathered vs. Scattered.

Is the church defined by the Sunday gathering? Or is the church defined by the Community of House Groups?

We at 4RC have tried to bring these two groups together. But we’ve pretty much stunk at it. We’ve had good ideas… but bad application.

We’ve had some leadership failures and some oversight ‘undersights.’

This weekend I come home with a renewed excitement and energy about this topic. We can be a gathered and scattered church and movement of God.

We can and I believe and hope that we will…

I know that this means a new role for me. It will probably affect me and my family in very big ways.

But like I said earlier… at any cost…

Pray for me as I prepare to share the heart of what I believe God is sharing.

This Sunday night may be the most important moment of preaching and communication that I have ever faced.

Alot weighs in the balance. I’m nervous and excited.

I expect that if we go down this road, we too will see lives changed, battle demons and have the opportunity to walk with God and one another in a way that only few get to see.

Can you imagine what a church could look like if there were hundreds of people who genuinely engaged in the mission of seeing individuals connected and transformed by Jesus?

If people overcame the notion of simply ‘coming to church’ and started ‘going as the church with the gospel?’

Come go with me. You have no idea how much you are needed.

The Church Of My Dreams: Unique Qualities…

Just for you, I have written some of the ‘unwritten’ realities of my dream church. Read through these unique qualities that we strive for at Four Rivers and see what you think…

I plan on writing a blog post about each paragraph over the next few weeks.

We are mobilized by Synergy and Incarnation. When God works in and around us the influence of a few is multiplied by Him. Without the presence & activity of the Trinity we are simply a group of people hanging out.

We protect our credibility in the community. Nothing else will drop the anchor and create a sluggish ethos quicker than a loss of reliability and integrity.

We are a surfacing community. We realize that true excellence comes from the depth of motivation and then guides the making of distinction.

We are an artistic community. We are learning that God is a graphic designer, a painter, a sculptor, a potter who specializes in beauty. Just as God is designing a world to attract men and women to Himself, we are designing with Him an experience of worship to connect with the people and culture of Western Kentucky and the surrounding area.

We are an authentic family. We have come to understand that if we are not real with God, ourselves and everyone else then our effort really doesn’t get anything done.

We recognize that relationships are vital to our health. We value all age groups, socio-economic groups, all races; basically everyone. All people are valuable and have an open, active invitation to God’s family.

We are a community of connection. It all starts with connection. Without connection to Christ we have no life. That connection stems beyond the personal into the corporate as we journey together as a community of individuals that is the Kingdom of God.

We are a church dedicated to clarity & truth. The Bible is true. We teach the Scriptures and expect that application of that truth will transform lives.

We cultivate a culture of acceptance and warmth. Jesus is the most selfless of all that claim to be God. All others require something extra. Jesus offers grace. As followers of Christ we set out to accept & welcome those that Jesus is connecting and transforming.

We believe that people ooze potential. We actually think that any person has the potential of making substantial, significant contributions to the world.

We see the value of the question. We desire our lives to cause people to ask important questions. It is in the question that they might find life in Christ. “Why would these people be so kind to me? How do they find their strength? How are they able to forgive? Why would they do that?” We recognize that the choices we make in connection to the relationships we have are a great tool of the Spirit of God to share grace and love with the world.

We are emerging into a church that invites other churches to journey into this new world with Jesus. In a time when many ministries are completely breaking ties with tradition and heritage, Four Rivers desires to journey with, assist and lead other churches as we experience what Jesus is doing in the world.
