Hey Paducah 18F Cohort

This week I start a new teaching series called ‘Remember’ where I will spend about 12 weeks looking at things like celebration, submission, worship, solitude, meditation, prayer. … as basically everything else we have been talking about.

I’d love to invite each of you to be there.

But I’d also love to ask you to help me.

Would any of you like to talk about your experiences with fasting, meditation, etc on a short testimony video. I would be willing to use them as part of my teaching. It would be a real blast and let us continue working together.

Anyone interested?

Spiritual Disciplines

Last night, while teaching “Foundational Issues of Life” for Mid Continent University, we embarked into a huge discussion about the use of certain spiritual disciplines in life.

We talked about Fasting, Meditation, Prayer, Solitude, Guidance, Study, Worship, Celebration and several other disciplines. Students shared why certain disciplines seemed distant from their life.

It seemed that the quite disciplines or the sacrificial ones seemed to be the most distant.

My question is… Do any of these disciplines being special spiritual experiences into your lives? Which ones seem most distant or difficult. And are there any that would be a great addition to your life?

My Life Changes Detailed…

I originally wrote this last December. But I’ve had many questions lately about getting in shape. So I thought I’d update the info and republish it…

If you haven’t noticed, several of the folks of Four Rivers are getting in shape. Over the last few months I’ve lost 35.5 lbs. And I only have 4.5 more to go before I reach my final goal. And I’m going to do it.

This is a spiritual journey for me. I believe God is directing me to rely more on Him and less on food. “My God will not be my stomach.”. So this is about reliance on Jesus and focusing on the health that obedience to him brings.

So how does it work for me… It starts with prayer and devotion to God’s direction. And from there…

Under the direction of my doctor and chiropractor, I developed a workout plan to reach my goals. Many have asked what I’m doing. So here it is.

I’ve addresses four issues.

1. Spiritual direction. (prayer, bible study, Christian meditation.)

I’ve just really begun to boost this area of my life. Honestly, although I am and have been highly dedicated to Jesus, prayer and the quite side to faith have never come easily to me. I tend to like a busy faith. If your familiar with the Mary ad Martha story… I’m definitely the one working hard in the kitchen who has a tendency to miss out on time just spent with Jesus…

So I’ll let you know more about this area when I’ve had more success. I think this spring season will be full of time with Jesus…

2. Exercise

I work out for about 30 – 45 minutes 5-6 days a week. I rotate between several workouts trying to balance muscle building and cardio.

A. Bar Bells & Free Weights- I start with 40 lbs and work my way down through 30 & 25 lbs. Basically work out with one until my arms can’t do it any more then drop down in the weight. I also started using an 18lb weight bar. This utilizes tension, stretching and leverage to lengthen and strengthen muscles.

B. Elipticle – I use the ‘Sprint 8′s’ style cardio workout on the elipticle. Exhausting but awesome! Before that I went for long times and distances.

Sprint 8′s involves going as hard as you possibly can for 30 seconds then taking a 1.5 minute break. And doing that for 8 rounds… (this is an amazing fat burning process… and doable for the beginner like me.)

C. Boxing – I alternate between right handed and south paw. I try to workout both upper and lower body with active footwork and punching on the heavy bag. Great for both cardio and strength training. I also do Sprint 8′s on the heavy bag. (it’s my favorite workout.)

D. Cable Weight Machine – this includes bench press, chin ups, curls, butterfly’s, etc. Great workout.

E. Old School – this is sit ups, push-ups, jumping jacks, jumping rope, crunches, chin-ups, etc. Very good for me…

F. Jogging – I typically don’t like to run. But the lighter I get, the more I like it. I run for distance at times… but I also like to use the ‘Sprint 8′s’ for running as well. I am presently training for a 5k and eventually… Half marathon. So I’ve been stretching some distance on my runs. But I really stink at it… (I blame it on the shoes… Lol)

2. Diet

I try to keep my day between 1500 and 2000 calories. But I really haven’t counted actively. I just try to be wise, mindful and aware of what I eat. I’ve replaced burgers with grilled chicken and my favorite pastas with salads. I still get full and don’t feel hungry for the most part.

I also eat more often with smaller portions. Probably 4 or 5 meals a day. 2 of them are usually some sort of protein bar or shake.

I watch my sugar and fat intake but still eat what I want… just not as much.

3. Vitamins & Supplements

A. EAS 100% Whey Protein shakes – 2 a day after workout & before bed.
B. Mega Men Multi Vitamins
C. B-12 time releases
D. Glucosamine
E. Fish Oil
F. Oxy Elite Pro Super Thermogenic (good but expensive stuff.)
G. Cellular Research Formulas ‘Colon Clear Formula’ & ‘Total Body Purifier’

This is what I do. I follow the directions to a T on each one. It seems to be working. I feel great.

Thanks for caring and for your prayers…

Special Prayer Requests at New Years

How can I pray for you today… New Years Eve? I’ll be monitoring the prayer requests left at iambradhenson.com all day and throughout the night until midnight. I’ll offer a special midnight prayer and go through all the requests. So feel free to offer up your needs, fears, questions, frustrations and celebrations…

In turn I’d like to ask you to pray for me. 2011 is going to be an amazing (seriously cool) year. I don’t know how I know that… but I sense it strongly. Pray that I will recognize God’s Will and be right in the middle of it. Pray that I will lead my family and church well. Pray that God keep my humility, character and outlook exactly where it needs to be. And pray that Four Rivers reach hundreds… no thousands… Of people with the gospel in 2011!

How can my blog readers (and I) pray for you?

Let’s try this out. I have about 250 regular blog readers. Most of them are Jesus followers who pray regularly. And I think we would benefit from praying for one another.

So, share your prayer request… and subscribe so that you will receive everyone’s prayer request.

And then, when you pray… consider writing your prayers out here for others to read and pray along with.

This is going to be amazing.

Ordering My Life with Holistic Godliness in Mind

I woke up this morning thinking about this.

I want to start my planning over… start with a blank calendar and begin writing down allocated times for the most important things. And I hope to do it on some sort of a Holistic Godliness scale.

For instance, spending the appropriate time listening to my boys talk about their day and helping them with their homework might not normally find its way to the top of the priority list… but maybe it should.

So, I would probably start with time focused on God, prayer, Bible study and then focus time on my wife and boys and simply being with them. Then I would care for myself with time to eat in a healthy way and exercise appropriately.

And I sense that there would still be time for all the needed work, travel, coaching, mowing, etc.

But in the long run, it would prioritize my relationship with God, my family and caring for my physical needs in the process so that I can be more to the rest of the responsibilities in my life.

I think budgeting could probably also be done this way. In fact, I think Ive handled our families budget this way for years. Its probably why my wallet is in better shape than my waste line…

So stay tuned… I plan on writing about this more over the next few weeks.

My first three things to be written in ink would be:

1. Time alone with God focused on prayer, Bible study and worship.
2. Focused time with Stephanie & the boys.
3. Time set aside to eat healthy and exercise my body and mind.

What would you first three entries be?

Prayer Request

My good friend and worship pastor Mike Rothwell called this morning to tell me his daughter, who is 31 weeks pregnant with twins, was air lifted last night to a Nashville hospital.

She is dilated 4 cent.

2 things.

Pray that Christina stop dilating and the babies to be safe. (This family lost a child just before birth a few years ago. As you can imagine, it was a devastating experience.)

The second request is important, but much less than the previous prayer request.

I’d like to encourage Mike to stay in Nashville this weekend. So pray that we will be able to find another worship leader for this Sunday asap…

Thx.

Alone Time

This week I am in Orlando at the Exponential Conference.

I try to come to things like this fairly often. It seems that getting away from the church, staff, and even family provide some sort of solace for me in which I hear from God more clearly.

Jesus would sneak off into the woods to pray. I leave town for leadership conferences and personal advances.

I’m praying about and seeking God’s Will in several areas. I won’t get in to the specifics, but basically they range from family, calling and personal significance to parenting, marriage and church planting.

If I didn’t find a way to get alone with The Spirit of Jesus and listen, I’m pretty sure I would dry up spiritually.

Today I have felt alive. Very alive…

And it seems like I’m hearing and seeing more clearly.

God’s voice has been everywhere. From Mrs Henderson on the plane to Matt Chandler at the conference… I’m hearing from God.

So, where do you go to hear or see God? I really want to know. Feel free to share.
