New Tattoo Scripture Verse

20120316-132713.jpg

Ok, before you start asking. I have not gotten a tattoo. But I did see a new one that interested me.

One of the contestants on the FX reality show ‘The Ultimate Fighter Live’ has the Scripture verse 2 Corinthians 2:14 tattoos on his right arm and pectoral.

At first glance, I couldn’t remember that verse. So I looked it up.

Beautiful truth in this verse.

So, if you are going to permenantly attach a verse to your personal identity… This is a good choice.

Here it is…

“But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume.” (2 Corinthians 2:14 NLT)

For my fellow MMA fans.

Nate Marquardt has always been one I’d my favorite MMA athletes. He’s a strong believer and son of a pastor.

He’s also 7 time king of Pancrease. Super guy.

That’s why I was shocked when he was scratched and fired from the UFC the day before his big fight. Here is n article I found on mmafighting.com

Nate Marquardt Breaks Silence on Suspension, UFC Firing
June 28, 2011 03:05 by Mike Chiappetta
Taking full responsibility for the problems that led to his firing over the weekend, Nate Marquardt explained
that a high testosterone level caused by hormone replacement therapy (HRT) led to the medical suspension that knocked him from the main event of the recent UFC on Versus 4.

Making his first public statements since the incident, Marquardt appeared with manager Lex McMahon on The MMA Hour for a one-hour interview to address the cause of his termination, which had been until now a mystery.

He explained that in August 2010, issues with sluggishness, memory loss and irritability led him to see his primary care physician, who discovered he suffered from low testosterone levels and recommended HRT. Marquardt applied for and received an exemption from the New Jersey state athletic commission for his March 2011 fight over Dan Miller.

The approval though, came with a caveat. After the fight, Marquardt needed to stop the treatment for eight weeks so a New Jersey commission-approved endocrinologist could re-check his levels and make sure his natural levels were indeed low, making the therapy a medical necessity.

In the meantime, though, Marquardt accepted the fight with Story, and attempted to gain HRT clearance in Pennsylvania, the host state of the scheduled fight.

Because of the eight-week treatment absence, Marquardt’s levels fell low, and with three weeks remaining to his fight, Marquardt’s doctor gave him a testosterone shot to combat the problem. Marquardt’s levels were regularly monitored and as he approached fight week, he knew they were high, but expected them to drop to satisfactory levels by weigh-in day.

“The week of the fight I requested several tests,” Marquardt said. “Each test showed that the levels were going down. I took a test on weigh-in day, and it was still above the range the athletic commission was going to let me fight.”

“But [it was] in close proximity, and it had been trending down significantly throughout the week,” McMahon added.

At that point, Marquardt was informed he was not going to be allowed to fight and put on suspension.

“There are things I messed up,” he said. “I have to take responsibility.”

But, however, one thing the duo stressed is that Marquardt never made an effort to hide anything, and that he had been in constant contact with Pennsylvania’s commission as well as the UFC, which was aware of the issue. In fact, not only had he gone through New Jersey, but also fights in Texas and Germany, in which he disclosed the situation to the governing bodies.

“Nate was hiding nothing,” McMahon said. “He made every effort to comply. When he found out his results were high, he ran out of time.”

Looking back, Marquardt, who cried at two different points of the interview, regrets several actions that may or may not have contributed to the problem. One thing he pointed out was that several years ago, he regularly took androstenediol, a popular supplement that was sold over-the-counter at nutrition shops until being reclassified as a steroid in 2005 and banned. Marquardt said he took the supplement for several years and wonders if it could have compromised his system and led to low testosterone production.

He also said he should have better monitored his ranges through blood tests soon after taking his first testosterone shot.

In addition, he added that when he went through the New Jersey commission protocol for an exemption, they raised some red flags about his doctor, including that he had prescribed an “off-label” prescription for Marquardt, basically meaning he had furnished Marquardt with a drug that was designed for a different use.

“From what I understood, it was common for doctors to use it for that reason,” Marquardt said.

In retrospect, his team admits that should have been something that alerted their radar.

“The NJ commission sent a very clear statement that the doctor he was using had been incomplete, was using protocols that were not approved by the USADA,” McMahon said. “At that point in time, that should have been a significant indicator to go see a specialist, to go see someone whose core competency was this. So I think that’s another area where Nate and our team have to take responsibility. At the end of the day, you’re dealing with a high-level professional athlete, one of the best fighters in the world. How could you potentially jeopardize that situation? Go to the best doctor you could get your hands on.”

McMahon and Marquardt said he will no longer be using his original doctor and have begun the process of finding a highly qualified specialist.

But as of now, his MMA career remains in limbo. Marquardt said that he took a test on Sunday morning that had him well within the standard to fight. He hopes to be taken off suspension as early as Wednesday, when the Pennsylvania commission members are scheduled to meet and review the most recent set of tests.

But what is next for him remains for now, anyone’s guess. McMahon said he’s already received contract and fight offers for Marquardt, and that when he’s ready to move on, it won’t take long to find him a deal.

Curiously, after a 14-fight tenure with the UFC, Marquardt and his team found out he had been fired like everyone else, through Dana White’s online video just after weigh-ins. The two only had a short conversation after he was suspended by the commission, with White asking him “How you can you let this happen?” Because of White’s anger, Marquardt said he was not overly shocked that he was cut, and that it was something he “half-expected.” He added that he hopes to get another chance to fight in the UFC one day, but that it’s something out of his control.

“I just want to get past this situation right now, get off suspension, let the dust settle and go from there,” he said, adding that when he does return, it will be as a welterweight.

If there is one silver lining to this all, Marquardt says that the HRT use might have saved his marriage. The treatment, he said, took away the moodiness and irritability that made him difficult to live with.

It’s a choice he had reinforced shortly after he lost out on his big fight, and got fired from his big job. When speculation abounded and rumors and disgust were hurled his way, Team Marquardt closed its ranks.

“Of course it’s a nightmare and very stressful and unimaginable in certain instances, but at the same time, I lean on my faith in God,” said Marquardt, who apologized to the UFC as well as his sponsors, friends and family. “My wife has been so supportive. I got back to the hotel after weigh-ins. My family was there, and i realized I’m still such a blessed man. My daughter’s there, and my wife. I still feel very blessed.”

New Year’s Excitement and Predictions for UFC 125

I wrote this article for www.cagepages.com. It went up about 1 hour ago on that site.

Tonight’s UFC 125 will answer several questions for me. And I for one am very excited about it.

I have to admit, I’m not your average MMA fan. I don’t neccesarily prefer stand up to ground game. I don’t always prefer finishes to decisions. And I don’t tend to think that wrestling based mma fighters are boring.

So I’m more excited about the Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard fight than most. But that’s just me. I know I’m strange in that and probably a few other aspects.

Tonight we will see:

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard for the UFC Lightweight Title. I’ve got Frankie winning by split decision. I think the match will be a near draw. It could go either way. I personally like both guys… and will be excited no matter who wins.

Chris Leben vs Brian Stann to see who will take a step toward a title shot at middle weight. I’m picking Leben by 2nd round TKO. Either way, however many minutes of this fight actually take place… it will be a barn burner. This could easily be fight of the night… easily.

Nate Diaz vs Dong Hyun Kim. I think this fight will look just like the Karo Parysian vs Nick Diaz fight from years gone by. I’m picking Kim by decision. I’m really looking forward to this one. Its also a good contender for fight of the night. I think that we may be seeing a new contender at Welterweight in DHKim.

Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi. I think Gomi may be the next contender at 155 and although I hate it… Guida is destined to be a gate keeper. It will also be a contender for fight of the night. Gomi by decision. (If I may… the one unknown in this is what Greg Jackson’s camp will mean to Guida. If anyone can take his game to the next level its Greg Jackson. If I am wrong about this predicion… it will be because of Guida’s new camp. And I’d be happy to be wrong in this prediction. I’m picking Gomi but rooting for Guida.)

Brandon Vera vs. Thiago Silva. I have been a fan of “the Truth” for several years. I really thought in 2007 that he might actually be a serious contender in both the light heavy and heavy weight divisions. But he has had a bad few years. He has become the ultimate under achiever in the UFC. He says he has changed… and is finally serious about his career. If so, he will submit Silva. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. I think Brandon Vera will end Thiago Silva’s career in the UFC at least for now… by 2nd round submision.

On the Ion channel prelims… we will see:

Marcus Davis vs Jeremy Stephens. Stephens is energetic and exciting. But I think he is overrated. I predict Marcus Davis KO’s him in the first or second round.

Josh Grispi vs Dustin Poirier. Grispi is the man. He is a real stud. He will end this quickly and decisively. This fight is designed to introduce Grispi to a broader audience. And he will take advantage of it. Grispi by KO in the first.

Phil Baroni vs Brad Tavares. It all depends on which Baroni shows up. Phil is a great personlaity. He brings a WWE like personality to the UFC. But I don’t think it will help him in the cage tonight. Tavares wins in the second by TKO.

On the untelivised undercard…

Mike Brown vs Diego Nunes. This is going to an absolutely great fight. And I think both of these guys will have every reason to be proud of their effort and performance at the end of the night. Brown is a real stud. But Diego Nunes is on his way up. He wins by decision.

Daniel Roberts vs Greg Soto. I don’t know so much about this matchup. But I’m going to take a good guess… Roberts by 2nd round Submission.

Antonio McKee vs Jacob Volkmann. Its about time that McKee is the the UFC. He is a real man. He takes this one after a long hard battle. McKee by decision.

Henson Home Gym

I’ve been writing a lot lately about working out, losing weight, burning fat and building muscle. Well, my lovely wife Stephanie and my two great boys Bradon & Jackson gave me some tools with which to work on this in my own life. The Christmas season has been good to me.

My first present was a pedestal punching bag from Everlast. It provides a great cardio and strength workout… plus gives me something to hit when I am frustrated. (That’s going to come in handy.)

Then yesterday, Stephanie and I were on an overnight trip to Nashville for our anniversary and we stumbled on a new Weider Pro 4950 at Sears at the bottom dollar price of about 30% of its value. I stole this thing… (not literally).

And thanks to my friends Caleb and Ryan, we were able to get it up and assembled last night. (As soon as Sears ships me the one piece that wasn’t there…) I’ll be able to put this thing together & begin working out on the new system.

Below is a review of the system that I read online…

If you love the rewards from working out in a gym but can’t find the opportunity to do so, it’s time to be on the lookout for a reasonably priced but efficient home gym.

The Weider Weight System Pro 4950 comes with resistance that perhaps the entire household can benefit from, at 325 pounds. Each one can personalize his or her program and maximize the use of the unit. You’ll gain benefits from this machine whatever your needs may be as it’s designed to give all of one’s muscles a burn.

What are the benefits to investing in a Weider Weight System Pro 4950? For one, it has 7 various workout stations in total, giving every user the ultimate workout experience at an unbelievely low price of $399.

Although it opens up width-wise and seems to occupy a lot of space when in use, the Weider Weight System Pro 4950 can easily be folded away for storage, thank to the Fold-Away Military Press System.

The Chest-Fly Station allows you to sculpt various areas of your pecs. It’s expandable and allows you to add definition to your minor and major pectoral muscles. The lower body is benefited by the Leg Press plus 4-Roll Leg Developer that aims to enhance the glutes, quads, hamstrings, hip flexors, and legs.

The Weider Weight System Pro 4950′s adjustable sewn seats are designed to give you more comfortable sessions, and they’re adjustable, so multiple users can position it and the backrest in the exact manner they want to better fit their bodies.

The preacher pad is adjustable as well with the use of a pop pin. You can easily change the preacher pad’s height so you can use the proper form while working out. A big boon to exercisers is the use of Precision System Components for the Weider Weight System Pro 4950. These parts, including precision pulley bushings and bearings, pave the way for smoother workout motions and last much longer.

The Chest Press Station defines your arms and your chest while the High Pulley with Lat Bar gives definition to your back and your lats. On the other hand, the Low Pulley with Flip-Up Row Plate enhances your upper body and sculpts your legs.

My New Sports Blog Article Is Up

Check out CagePages.com for my latest Mixed Martial Arts article. It’s all about UFC President Dana White’s softer side… It’s called ‘Well Done, Mr. White.”

Why would a pastor want to be a UFC sports writer?

Ever since I started writing articles for www.cagepages.com (a widely utilized website focused on the news around the world of Mixed Martial Arts) I have had various questions about my involvement. So I thought I’d try and give a quick answer here for anyone who was interested.

A few weeks ago, I was offered a chance to speak to thousands of men who are fans of mixed martial arts. It is a volunteer role and only requires about an hour each week.

The primary fan of this new sport is young males between the ages of 18 and 40. I’m 37 years old myself. And I have always felt a special calling to reach the men of my generation. So this certainly seemed like a great opportunity.

The focus of my writing is on manhood, spirituality, parenting and marriage from the perspective of Mixed Martial Arts. Therefore, I write about things that have happened in the lives of different martial artists and utilize those opportunities to communicate truth to the men who are reading. It has been a real blessing so far.

The primary writer for the site is also the lead journalist for the Dallas Cowboys franchise. And because of his success in the industry, the web site gets quite a lot of viewing.

So far I’ve written about men being providers for their home and just today… I wrote about the way men treat beautiful young women. You should read the article. Its the second article at the top of cagepages.com right now… called “Captain America and Naked Women.”

I’m really excited about the opportunity to use my hobby to share the love and truth of Jesus with men across the country. Its been quite a blessing.

I’ll let you know how it goes in the long run.

Brad

Well, this is new… Brad the sports writer.

This is new. Yesterday was my birthday. And I think that maybe God gave me a pretty cool gift.

As some of you know, I’m a fairly avid fan of MMA… mixed martial arts. And I know that doesn’t make sense to everyone… a pastor who likes MMA? But I love the discipline and focus that comes from martial arts. And although I’m not kosher with everything you will see on an MMA Pay Per View, I love the sport.

Yesterday I was offered a (non-paid) role with “Cage Pages” a global web site focused on MMA. I will be a sports writer focused on writing a weekly blog article with a unique focus. You can also find me on the ‘cagepages’ iPhone & iPad app.

My role is to speak to manhood, fatherhood and spirituality in the sport of MMA.

Sounds pretty cool huh. And those of you who know me know just how excited I am about a platform that lets me speak directly to young men in America. And MMA is by far the fastest growing sport for that group.

My first article is already written and should be published on www.cagepages.com sometime tonight or tomorrow. It is about Matt Hughes, a fighter, father and husband who is competing tomorrow night at UFC 123.

Its called “Wives & Win Bonuses.”

Let me know what you think.

And by the way… if you do go to that site… make sure that you make comments there. You can help win me some big points as the new guy by doing so.
