Survive or Thrive?

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post I came up with a few thoughts comparing a surviving church to a thriving church:

A surviving church attracts new members from other churches. A thriving church attracts the un-churched.

A surviving church ministers primarily to it members. A thriving church ministers to a community in need.

A surviving church‘s leadership is the inner clique preoccupied with position. A thriving church’s leadership is a family preoccupied with service.

A surviving church’s message can only be heard within its four walls. A thriving church’s message is on the lips of those who don’t attend.

A surviving church looks a lot like any other formal organization of people. A thriving church looks a lot like Christ.

Can you think of any other contrasts between surviving and thriving?

Greg
