Steal My Show
This week, I had the opportunity to spend most of the day shadowed by a young man as we did some ministry together. Throughout the day, we bumped into several people who were obviously glad to see me and were happy to be part of our day. The reaction of the young man was, “Wow! You’re a pretty big deal.”
I tried to explain that it isn’t about me. People respond enthusiastically to what God is doing around them. Being a pastor at Four Rivers Church just puts me right in the middle of that, regularly.
Still, it’s easy to get that confused. When enough people pat a leader on the back and expect good things from God when he comes around, the temptation is to think that it is more about that leader…and less about God. That’s a trap of pride for the leader and a life limitation for everyone around them.
A new song highlighted that principle for me ( http://tobymac.com/music). The newest release by tobyMac, “Eye On It” has a track that is right on point and right on time. Steal My Show provides us with the perspective of what it’s like to prepare for a huge concert, with adoring fans, while knowing that those fans need God to speak to them more than they need to be entertained. The chorus addresses God directly:
“If You wanna steal my show, I’ll sit back and watch You go
If You got somethin’ to say, go on and take it away
Need You to steal my show, can’t wait to watch You go
So take it away.”
This song reminds me that I need God to “steal my show.” In fact, it’s not even MY show… it’s HIS show. I get to serve in my own, particular (weird) way; I preach, teach, pray, counsel, visit, laugh, and cry. As I do all this, I have to remember that what everyone else needs is to connect to God more than they connect to me.
So, what about you? Is God stealing your show? Are you attempting to let His Spirit live through you in ways that will attract others to Him? They really DO need to see God through you.
After all, He is a pretty big deal.
