With a Name Like Jesus…

I was a city kid, raised by country folks. That shaped my beliefs and tastes more than I know. One critical area, upon which I have strong opinions, is the usual variety of canned fruit products. For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone would choose “preserves” over something as glorious as jelly.

I mean, not many things are better than a glob of fruit-flavored, sugary goodness, spread on toast, on PB&J, or just right out of the jar! How else can I get the pleasure of a dessert while convincing myself that I’m eating a healthy fruit snack.

For as long as I can remember, the gold standard for grape jelly has been Smucker’s. When I think of grape jelly (which happens more than you’d think), the image that comes to mind is the Smucker’s jar. And, of course, their slogan is seared into my brain: “With a name like Smucker’s, it has to be good.”

Ok, so all (maybe most) joking aside; there is something to be said for developing a culture of using quality resources to create a product that everyone loves. The Smucker family started with apples planted by Johnny Appleseed himself and branched out into a variety of fruit products. It wasn’t long before most people came to associate the Smucker’s name with wholesome, high-quality fruit products.

What is YOUR name associated with? No, you probably don’t make a variety of fruit products. But you do “bear fruit.” We all do something with our lives; we put our time and effort into tasks and into people.

Jesus said it this way: “When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.” (John 15:8 NLT)

I hope that my family remains deeply rooted in God’s truth, remains connected to the True Vine, and bears much, quality fruit. How about you? Are you connected to Jesus daily, allowing Him to nourish and prune you? If so, He will bear “much fruit” in your life. And with a name like Jesus, it has to be good!
