Love Isn’t Love…

“Love isn’t love until you give it away.”

Michael W. Smith wrote that. And he’s won a lot of awards for songwriting. Reba sang it too. I even heard something similar from Miley and the Jo Bros. I probably shouldn’t argue then, right?

But I will argue… a little. The point of those songs is that REAL LOVE is lived out in action. It isn’t just emotions and words, but choosing to live sacrificially for others. I agree with that. It’s good stuff.

But I would argue that EVERYONE LOVES SOMEONE sacrficially. We all “give away” our love. The problem is that most people on the planet give their love, time, and concern to the person they care about the most… themselves.

Love is always love. But who gets your love? If you only love yourself, you are missing the target… and some blessing.

You see, the essence of sin is letting our self-love overwhelm our love for others. If we are honest, most of us have to admit that, on a daily basis, we spend most of our time, energy, resources, and emotions on ourselves. The very best of us will extend that love to the people we have let into our circle. What about those others around us? What about those we haven’t even met yet?

Jesus challenges us to love them. ALL OF THEM. The people we like, the people we don’t like, and the people that don’t like us. Jesus did that. “For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.” (Romans 5:10 NLT)

We see from Jesus’ example that LOVE IS GIVING! He defined love as sacrificial giving of everything He had.

Let’s give ourselves good things. That’s fine.

Let’s give to the people we know well. That’s good.

Let’s give to the people that are difficult for us. That’s better.

Let’s give to the people we don’t know yet. That’s great!

Btw, God will bring them around when we are ready to love them like He would.
