90278489For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. (Ephesians 5:8-10 NLT)

If you are like me, there are several goals or important areas of your life that can quickly get relegated to the back of the priority line when busyness and urgency get in the way. It happens to me much more often than I care to admit.

A few areas of my life that I am determined to improve are:

1. Time Alone.

I have changed quite a bit over the years. There was a time when I gained great energy from crowds. But the more the crowd needs from me, the more I have realized that I need me too. I need me when I’m with my family and no one else. I need me when I’m the only one around. And God speaks to me when I am alone in a different kind of way than any other time. So I am determined to force myself to spend more time in solitude, silence and other types of alone time.

2. My Diet & Exercise.

2 years ago I lost over 50 lbs of unneeded body weight. I felt great. The truth is, it wasn’t about weight. It was about stress. And it was about what I did with stress. Prior to that, I got stressed and I ate food. That was my pattern. In fact, I felt convicted that God was saying that I treated food the way I should have treated only Him.

2 years later, I have gained about 20 lbs of that back. And honestly, it is because of the same reasons. I have made some big changes lately. And those changes caused a great deal of stress. And I ate.

But now, I am on the other side of those changes. And I feel great about where I am. Its time that I become determined once again, to stay healthy, eat well and exercise more often.

3. Bible Study

I’ve studied the Bible quite a bit over the past 20 years. But one major flaw in my life is that I tend to study the Bible for preparation of sermons and teaching opportunities much more than I study it for personal consumption. I know I will always study God’s Word in order to teach it. But I am determined to study it with no sermon in mind as well. I need to read it for me. I need to digest it for me. I think my life will continue to deepen in faith and strengthen in hope as I look to His Word personally, privately and devotionally.

These are three major areas where I am determined.
